I purchased Ledford dulcimer 1104 probably in 1967 or 1968, as I recall, from a shop either  on or near the Blue Ridge Parkway in the vicinity of Asheville, NC.  The back and sides appear to be walnut.  The top has diamond sound holes. The fingerboard has no notches or cut-out arches.  The number and “Made by” signature and location are hand-written on the inside back.

2/5/2021 - Hey, Bill! It's been some time since I've been on the site. I was checking out the list of Homer Ledford dulcimers, and was hoping to add mine to the list! I posted pics and info a couple of years ago, but not sure the website was working then. It is a "SP" 1215. I see that there is no listing for that number. Well, I have it! Bought it from Homer at the SHHG Craftsman's Fair. Actually, he took the order and made it "special," hence the "SP" note along with the number. We have a small group of gals who play here in West Monroe, LA, and they have invited me to join. I don't know how many of them had ever seen rosewood pegs or had a clue who Homer Ledford was. They suggested I might want to replace the wooden pegs with machined ones! I nearly fainted! NOT!!!!! Do hope to hear from you.

Farmer, Wes

My wife bought # 1216 about 1966-67 from Homer.  She says she paid $65.00 for it.  Over the years it had come unglued so our son Wes brought the dulcimer to Homer's home to be repaired.
In your listing of Dulcimers you have Wes Farmer as the owner of that dulcimer.  Could/Would you change it to Nancy Farmer, 400 East Lovers Lane, Lebanon,  KY  40033

6/25/2009 My name is Dave Heistand and in case you want to know, back in 1969 I bought a dulcimer in Nashville.  When I looked into one of the diamond sound holes, I saw penciled on the bottom “No. 1229” and “Homer Ledford”.  So when I finally went looking on the web for info about Mr. Ledford this last week (don’t ask why it took me so long – I don’t know), and found the website and then the list of instruments, I went looking into the sound hole again to refresh my memory.  There it was.  The only thing is, my number is not on your list.

1/30/2009 I acquired the hourglass dulcimer a few years ago and it hung on my wall until recently when my wife began playing again.  It had been roughly treated and needed some support and regluing, but now it's as good as ever.  Sides and back are walnut, top and fingerboard appear to be butternut with diamond-shaped holes.  I love the form and the wonderful thin wood that give it such a mellow sound.  Seems the groups my wife is playing with favor the DAd tuning and chord the instrument with their fingers instead of playing with a stick (whatever you call it).  So I had to add frets across the board instead of the two-string frets that were on Homer's original.  The number is 1463, which according to your WEBsite was made in 1968.  It's signed "Homer C. Ledford,
Winchester Ky."

2/27/2008 I own Homer Ledford's dulcimer #1849.  I bought it from him at the First
"Annual" Greenup Folk Festival in Greenup, Kentucky in 1969.   It is
a 4-string dulcimer and is made of 88 year old church pews--yellow poplar top, sides and back are walnut.  Heart shaped sound holes.

4/2/2010 1867  Was sold to me circa 1971-2. I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Ledford, after driving cross country from California. He was so gracious and warm to me, though he was busy in his workshop, and  I was a complete stranger. I'll never forget his enthusiasm for this beautiful instrument and how generously he shared that with me. What he sold me, with it's golden top and heart shaped holes, gave me many years of happy evenings with friends and music.

The label in my dulcimer reads:

Yellow poplar from 1880 piano, heart-shaped sound holes, 4 string  2/6/2008 Dear Webmaster,
I came upon your Ledford dulcimer listing today and noted that the info for #1875 is not correct.  #1875 was sold to me when I lived in Tallahassee, Florida.  It is in fact a three string with diamond shaped sound holes and not a four string with heart shaped holes as is listed.  The number 1875 is viewable through one sound hole and it is signed by Homer who also write in pencil "Guaranteed" near the number.  Unfortunately, I don't have the invoice which indicated the wood he used.  Although I recall ordering the dark walnut friction pegs I can only say the body appears to be of a lighter wood, probably poplar.
The instrument is now at my home in Bridgewater, NJ.  I still use it sometimes around Christmas.  Perhaps more importantly it was an inspiration for me to try making dulcimers myself.  I built three in all, two of which I gave away as gifts.
    Hope this info is useful.

Sincerely,

Al Ernst
Bridgewater, NJ

4 string, heart-shaped sound holes, walnut fingerboard, butternut top

Hello!  I acquired this dulcimer from a friend because she knew l played them. I also have a letter from Colista Ledford dated 2003 with info on the original owner. From that first owner, the dulcimer ended up in a music store in KY and then to my friend in TN in the late 1990s, who gave it to me in 2005.

I noticed the listing of Homer's dulcimers on your website has an inaccurate description of this particular dulcimer. The handwritten label confirms that #1894 is the correct number and built in 1970. However this dulcimer is three stringed, with three rosewood pegs and has diamond sound holes, not hearts. It is walnut and butternut and only the third fret goes across all three strings.  I do play it but, unfortunately, it was improperly stored by previous owners and the fretboard is slightly warped. I find I can play it capoed at the third fret; somewhat limiting but I get to hear its lovely tone.

There is another Ledford just like mine (butternut top and diamond sound holes) displayed at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.
