Old back  4/17/2008 We have just acquired Homer's #2020 from our aunt Bonnie Stanford, formerly of Tulsa OK.
It has not been played much, but seems to be in excellent condition despite having been stored in its original box and quilted cover since 1971.
We live in New Mexico, and are hoping it will survive our low humidity... any suggestions?
Thanks,
Bunny Bowen

12/9/2007 Hello, I am the owner of dulcimer #2130 which I purchased from Mr. Ledford at his home in Winchester, KY. The dulcimer (and I) are, for the past 30 years, located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. As I recall from our conversation at the time, the wood for my dulcimer was from the interior of some very old, perhaps one of the original buildings, located on the campus of Berea College which was under renovation. I believe it is poplar.

Best Wishes,

B. Michael Parrish

JUST PURCHASED HOMER'S #2191 DULCIMER FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER, ED DALE, WHO PURCHASED IT IN 1972 OR 1973. HE SAYS IT HAS NOT BEEN PLAYED IN OVER 30 YEARS AND HAS BEEN KEPT IN A HUMIDITY CONTROLLED ROOM. HE GAVE ME ALL THE ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE, ORIGINAL PRICE LIST ETC.

HOMER'S DOCUMENTATION -  IT IS A YP-1900 MODEL WITH SPECIAL MATCHED WALNUT WOOD IN THE SIDES, WALNUT BACK AND FINGERBOARD (OVER 100 YEARS OLD IN 1972). THE YELLOW POPLAR WAS CUT IN 1867.

THE DULCIMER WEIGHS A LITTLE LESS THAN 1 LB. 10 OZ.  IT IS A BEAUTIFUL WORK OF ART AND CRAFTSMANSHIP. IT SHOULD PROBABLY BE IN A MUSEUM BUT I WILL TRY TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY IT. SINCE I AM 78+ YEARS - EASIER SAID THAN DONE.

YOUR WEBSITE IS A FINE TRIBUTE TO HOMER AND COLISTA'S JAM IS A FINE TRIBUTE TO HER!

2/1/2008 Homer Ledford stayed in my home in 1974 when he was participating in an Applachian Festival at SUNY Buffalo.  Homer spent three nights and three days with my then husband and four young children.  Our youngest, Gabrielle Lyn, received a great deal of kindness and attention from Homer.  He would ask about her this way --"Now where is the least one?"  When it was time for Homer to return to his home in Winchester, he gave our family one of his beloved dulcimers #2208 and I played it and treasured it for two years until my husband and I divorced.  I had hoped to receive it as part of the divorce settlement, but it was not to be.  I always missed that dulcimer and thought of Homer many times.  Christmas 2006, my children's father saw fit to return this beloved dulcimer to me and I recently had it tuned.  It is a beautiful instrument and I plan to learn to play it once again after so many years.  I wonder if anyone can tell me how to value this beautiful instrument for insurance purposes.
Thank you,
Shari Delisle, Ph.D.

4 string, butternut top, sold at Berea Fair  2/19/2008 I recently purchased Homer's #2257 from the original owner here in Winchester.
Inside it has "Yellow poplar top from Berea College Howard Hall Dormitory 1867  #2257 sp"
It has walnut back and sides.  The original owner said Colista told her the tuners were ebony.  I don't know anything about exotic hardwoods  It seems like the ebony chess pieces I've used are more black.  I know he used a lot of rosewood tuners.  I am going to ask Colista if she has any more info.  If you have any more info I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you,

1/17/11 Homer Ledford built dulcimer #2272 for me when I lived in Lexington, Kentucky.  I am an architect. Homer and I spoke at length about the top material to be used for my dulcimer.
He chose to build the top out of salvaged yellow poplar from the Howard Hall Dormitory at Berea College (1867).
The legacy of that building has resonated in my dulcimer since Homer lovingly crafted her.  What a beautiful instrument. I see "craft" dulcimers, all of the time, and am appalled.
I am proud to say that the instrument is in A-1 condition and has lived in its case when not being played.

Heart-shaped sound holes, butternut top, 4 string, fancy inlaid back  12/31/2009 I am the original owner of Homer Ledford dulcimer #2333, which Homer sold to me when I was 11 (via my mother), Ann Harris of Kissimmee, Florida, in 1972. Her name is shown incorrectly on your list as "Ann Harrison".  http://www.backroombluegrassband.com/hlccbweb/instruments/hldulcimers2001to3000.htm

My dulcimer has started to spit at the seams where the glue has dried out over the years. It is a gorgeous instrument that I can no longer play due to its deteriorating condition. I would greatly appreciate any advice you may have on quality restoration of this beautiful piece.

Sincerely,
Earl Harris

8/3/2008 Hi, I just found your web-page and registry for Homer Ledford's dulcimers.

I am the original owner of #2536, made in 1973, special top of poplar from Howard Hall, Berea  College, and sold to my parents at a country fair somewhere in the Appalachians (I'd have to ask them exactly where). Apparently, it was made for a special order, but the originator of the order never showed up. My parents followed Mr.
Ledford to the next fair site where he sold it to them. It was a Christmas present to me when I was in my last year of university and I still play it regularly. It is a well-loved instrument!

Best regards,
Adrienne Stevenson

[number circled] Canada [underlined twice]   6/11/11 Hi, I saw your Homer Ledford dulcimer serial number list on your website and would like to provide some correction and update.  It appears that the name of the purchaser of 2539 is incorrect.
My grandmother Ann Davis (18 Trinity Circle, Waltham MA 02154 at the time) purchased #2539, which she gave me recently.  I also have her original order for the YP-1900 placed on 8/29/1973 (handwritten details apparently from Mrs. Ledford) and a postcard (addressed to my grandmother) from Mrs. H.C. Ledford typed/signed 10/15/73 saying that Homer asked her to write, expressing apologies that he had  been sick and the order was delayed.  I can see that Mrs. Ledford typed “Davie” and retyped the last letter with an over-strike “s”, in several places, perhaps creating the Davies confusion.  I am not sure about details of the Canadian resident listed on your website next to #2539.
The signed label is still inside the dulcimer and, in addition to the above serial number and Mr. Ledford’s signature, it reads: Yellow Poplar top from Berea, College Howard Hall Dormitory (1867).
The dulcimer is in outstanding shape and my family and I are very proud owners.

Tom Bratton's daughter 3/16/2009 Dear Friends

I thought you would be interested to know that dulcimer number 2567 is now over here in England!

I bought it from an antiques seller in Clearwater, Florida, via Ebay. I took delivery of it just yesterday. It is in need of a little attention as it looks as if the wood has been cleaned with a solvent based product and this has affected the glue on the side joints. But my partner is a skilled amateur luthier so we will give it the tender loving care it needs to bring it back to life.

I only started playing dulcimer 6 months ago, but we have heard and read much about Homer, and feel so priveleged to now have one of his instruments in our lives. We are really excited and look forward to hearing this one for real, once it is restored and playable.

3/20/2008 Hi,

My name is Kendra Ward and I am a third generation dulcimer player from southeast Ohio. I knew and respected Homer very much and I am sad that he is gone.

I am writing to tell you that I have had one of Homers dulcimers for a very long time and just now stumbled onto your site. It was given to me by my Uncle Woodrow Mollohan who played it until he had a stroke many years ago. He is listed as the owner on your site, but I thought you would like to know that I now have it.

It is listed as #2568 with the original owner as Woodrow Mollohan, Kalamazoo, MI

It has an odd pencil marking inside. Maybe you would know what it means: (1867) It is located above the #2568 and is written in pencil.

This instrument is hourglass, narrower at the top. It has heart shaped soundholes, 4 strings, and wooden tuners.

Thanks so much!

3/20/11  Yesterday dulcimer #2783 came home to Kentucky.

I polished it with lemon oil and Doug re-stringed it; the old strings were shot.  Then I tuned it to DAA (more or less; I'm not used to friction tuners) and played a few tunes, mostly American hymns like Holy Manna and Simple Gifts.  It has a good sound.  This evening I played some Jean Ritchie tunes -- it was good to hear "Ground Hog" and "Pretty Saro" on this instrument.  So the dulcimer is being played and the wood is beginning to speak again.
The dulcimer is a YP-1900 with a poplar top, walnut sides and back, and rosewood tuners.  The label states it is #2783 (of course), and includes this comment: "Yellow poplar top from old dwelling in Lexington, KY over a 100 years old."  Boy, I'd love to know what the old dwelling was and when he got the wood.  Maybe when said dwelling was torn down back in the early seventies? Anyway, it has wood from Fayette, was made in Clark, and now lives in Madison.  I like the symmetry.
I purchased the dulcimer from Jay and Deborah Caldwell in Knoxville.  Jay said his aunt purchased it in Pigeon Forge.  She died about a year ago.
Based on your copy of the ledger on the website, and the ledger we have in Archives, it was made in November 1974.  So it's 36 years old.  I have a cousin born the same month and year.
Thanks very much for pointing me in the direction of this dulcimer.  It's so good to have a Ledford instrument now.  It is beautiful.

3/1/2009 : I own # 2956. My name is Jonathan Perry, and I now live in Nashville, TN. I bought the dulcimer new in 1975.  Homer was giving a demonstration and playing several of his instruments, including this one. When he finished his set I bought it right off his lap. I was happy to have it, and still am. I now play it with the Nashville Grand Old Dulcimer Society.

Homer was a fine man and a real artist.
