This selling eBay, June 20, '06  5/13/2008Dear Webmaster, Thank you so much for making the Homer Ledford Dulcimer List available online.  I just discovered it yesterday and would like to add to/correct the listing for my dulcimer. I am Joy Jerkatis from Lexington, KY.  Formerly known as Joy McElroy and the original and current owner of dulcimer 4105  - 1977 -YP-1900.  The dulcimer has never been listed for sale on eBay or anywhere else.  I bought it from Homer at the Berea Craft Fair and although I don't have the dated reciept, 1977 sounds about right.  From the label in the dulcimer and other papers I received with it as well as visual examination, #4105 is described as:  Special, top-yellow poplar from a house over 100 years old near Lexington, KY; fancy grain walnut back and matched sides, fine sweet tone, limited production due to scarcity of woods, 4 string, butternut fingerboard, traditional hourglass shape, 33.5" long by 6.75" wide by 1.75" deep; special whittled heart shape sound holes, rosewood tuning pegs, dogwood blossom carving at 3-5-7&10th frets, "SP" on last fret, L and dogwood "scene" on end of fretboard.  Inside label signed and numbered. #4105, Homer C Ledford. ------ I really enjoy returning to this website from time to time and always discover something new.  Thank you! Didn’t realize you had a list.  My number is 4127.  Bought it from Homer when I was camp counselor down in Hendersonville, NC about the year 1977.  He was gracious enough to let some of us play along with him on some of those “campfire evenings”. It is still in the hands of the original owner, Mrs. Melba Yankovich and after several moves, it is now with her in Sherman Texas. Melba first came to Homer Ledford's door to have he fathers fiddle repaired. While there in his shop, she saw this dulcimer, which has a 5 pointed star inlayed on the fretboard and fell in love with it then and there. (Texas gal from the *Lone Star* *State*).  At the time, Homer wanted to hang onto this dulcimer since he had built it as a show piece for the upcoming Berea Fair. Melba being Melba worked on him till he gave in, (Did I mention she's a Texas gal?) and he eventually sold her the Dulcimer. (If I know her husband Uncle Johnny, he was probably offering Homer plenty for it. He loves her like none other and he would see her happy no matter the cost.)  (I still have this image in my mind of a bewildered Homer Ledford  standing in his shop with a handful of cash trying to figure out how he was going to build that replacement dulcimer in time.) Dulcimer #4155? About 2 years ago, I came across someone playing a dulcimer on the net and thought it had a beautiful sound and it might be something I could learn to play. I went on to do as much research as I could, learning about the Luthiers of today and the great Luthiers of the past including Homer Ledford. Eventually, I settled on a builder and placed an order.   While I was waiting for it to be delivered, the subject of dulcimers came up during a phone conversation with Aunt Melba. She mentioned that he had a dulcimer too. I was thinking since she had played the piano some that she must mean a hammered dulcimer, but she said no, it was a mountain dulcimer and that she bought it from a very nice man in Kentucky name of Ledford. I about fell out of my chair! Here I am just about to start my journey and already there is Homer Ledford in the family!  Melba and Johnny moved from Kentucky to Austin Texas around 1980 and had been living there until just recently when Johnny's failing health forced them back to Sherman. The dulcimer is in great shape and I insist she keep it out so she can enjoy it. I have left her some CD's of dulcimer music and I bring my dulcimer with me when we visit for added inspiration. 									Here’s a description of my Homer Ledford dulcimer #4210, signed by Homer.  I’m the original owner but never learned how to play the dulcimer like my mother, Sally George. --Yellow poplar top from old cabin (over 135 years old) near LaGrange, KY --Back and sides are a darker wood (very pretty, perhaps walnut) --Heart-shaped sound holes --Wooden tuning pegs --3 stringed, traditional hour-glass shape --Paid about $250 for it in 1978 (would like to sell it at the current value since I’ll eventually need to sell most of my possessions when I move to Kenya in a few years) It was a memorable visit at Mr. Ledford’s home in Winchester when I accompanied my mother, Sally George, who was good friends with Homer. She had two very “special” dulcimers made by Mr. Ledford (#4232 & #4440).  Also, my dad still has the fretless banjo that Homer made (only a few of them in the world).  I noticed on the site that Susie (#4270) and Bob (#4797), the well-known Jean Ritchie, and other dulcimer performers have at least one Ledford dulcimer.  I believe that mom taught Sallie Bingham (#4349), how to play.  Homer was a wonderful and talented man whom we saw at Pine Mountain State Park, Carter Caves, Berea, and other events.  Thanks for updating your site with this information.  You have done an amazing job with the historical records!  Josie Wiseman, another artisan, directed me to homerledford.com

Curly cherry back (1 piece), spruce top, 5 strings.  5/18/2009 I am the owner of this dulcimer, having bought it second-hand about six or seven years ago.  It had originally been bought from a New York shop (in or shortly after 1978, its year of manufacture) by a lady from Wales who had originally intended to give it to her son.  However it had been damaged on the plane back from the US to the UK, and was hardly ever played for years.  I bought it very cheap from a music shop.  I couldn’t believe my good fortune!  There was a crack in one side and the back was almost completely detached.  After repair the dulcimer is a joy to play, with a beautiful silvery, traditional sound.  Although it was made as a 5-string, I just play it as a standard 3-string.  I have to confess that I have installed geared planetary pegs because I couldn’t get on with the wooden pegs.  Best wishes, John Shaw (Bristol, England).

It was made expressly for me with my specifications of an additional fret..which John Jacob Niles put in one of my earliest dulcimers made by Jethro Amburgey of Hindman. I no longer have that dulcimer, or a tear-drop shape one that I had Mr. Ledford also made for me, with a butternut top. #4400 is made from cherry taken from the old doors that came out of Bell House in Lexington. I still hav #4400. I spent my teenage years, through my time in seminary at Yale -- up until about 1970--playing the dulcimer and singing KY folk songs, for money if they would pay me. In high school and college, I performed for a number of civic clubs: Optimist, Rotary, Kiwanis, etc

4704	1982			YP-1900FT					11/24/2007 I just checked the web site and noticed that my dulcimer, 4704, made in 1982 did not list my name as the owner.  My husband, John Fortune purchased the dulcimer and even visited Homer's workshop a couple of times and watched him as he made the dulcimer for me.  The top is a very old piece of yellow poplar that he said was over 200 years old and the rest was walnut.  I think he told John that is was from old church pews.  John gave me the dulcimer for my birthday in May 1982.  At that time we were living in Winchester, KY.  I don't remember and neither does John the amount he paid for the dulcimer.  Is there a record of that?  Thanks. 									My name is Bruce Hiner.  I was given a dulcimer made by Mr. Ledford, #4747, by the widow of John B. Murphy.  She had several of these special instruments because Mr. Murphy provided wood from various sources for Mr. Ledford to use to make them.  My wife and I had admired them from the first time we saw them, and Mr. Murphy's widow had loaned us this one to use.  When Mr. Murphy died, she gave this dulcimer to us, in the hope it would be used to make music for years to come.  I am thrilled to be able to say I have a Homer Ledford dulcimer; even better that I also knew the man who provided him the wood.

									I purchased dulcimer 4900 on EBAY around 2000. It was slightly damaged around the tail piece. I had known Homer since 1980 and called him at home about repairing it and asked how much he would charge. Homer told me that if it was damaged because of poor workmanship, he would repair it for free. I took it over to his home, he looked it over and charged me $4.50. I can guarantee that the workmanship was not at fault. Someone dropped the dulcimer. This is a “special acoustical dulcimer”. Homer told me that he made only 8 of these instruments and by special order. I still have the instrument and it is still in near pristine condition. Dr. James L. Yount, Berea, KY.
